Volk's 3-pointer at buzzer lifts Maine West past Deerfield


Maine West 54, Deerfield 53: Tony Volk made a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Maine West the dramatic win in both teams’ Central Suburban League North opener Tuesday in Des Plaines.

Maine West took a 40-39 lead into the fourth quarter after being up 27-20 at halftime.

Volk led Maine West with 12 points, followed by Allante Bates (10 points), Raghav Patel and Joel Ferraren (8 points apiece) and Tom Kukec and Jamal Sherman (6 points apiece).

Deerfield was led by Eric Porter (20 points), who was 5-for-5 on three-point shots.  Samuel Kuznetsky (10 points), Jack Gurvey (9 points) and Alexander Glantz (6 points) also contributed.

Deerfield finished with eight three-pointers, and Maine West had six.

Maine South 45, Maine East 29: The Hawks played some lockdown defense to spur them to a 26-4 halftime lead, and never looked back. 

Maine South (6-0) was led in scoring by Danny Quinn (10 points) and Frank Dounis (9 points) who each played just a quarter and a half.  

Maine East dropped to 1-4 on the season. 

Glenbrook South 69, Waukegan 63: GBS junior Danny Nikitas was on fire in the second half from three-point land, and hit six of his seven threes in the final two quarters to help the Titans (4-3, 1-0 in CSL South) win their conference opener.  He finished with 23 points in the game.  

GBS also made all 12 of its free throws in the fourth quarter to stave the Bulldogs (3-4, 0-1) off. Titans seniors Mraques Thompson and Justin Busiel were each 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.
