Maine South junior twins Audrey and Haley O’Connor not only are netting success on the tennis court, but also inside and outside of the classroom.
That’s why the sisters are being recognized as this week’s Maine South Student-Athlete Spotlight presented by Huntington Learning Center Park Ridge.
Audrey O’Connor won the No. 1 singles title and Haley O’Connor claimed the No. 2 singles crown at the Central Suburban League South Tournament Saturday. The sisters also were state qualifiers as freshmen but did not play high school tennis last season.
“While many are well acquainted with Audrey’s and Haley’s prowess on the tennis court, they may be less familiar with other attributes that these sisters bring to the team,” Maine South tennis coach Jo Ann Bondi said. “Audrey and Haley serve as great role models for the girls on the tennis team. Whether it be conditioning or practicing, their work ethic is the one of the strongest I have seen as a coach. They give back to the team by their willingness to work with other team members and to help them develop their strokes and overall game. They have organized activities designed to help the team bond.”
The sisters also take a variety of accelerated and Advanced Placement courses and are Hawk Pride leaders.
“As Hawk Pride leaders, they help create and deliver character education lessons to freshman and sophomore classes on a regular basis,” Bondi said. “Both girls are outstanding students. As one can clearly see, these two young women are truly a dynamic duo.”
