Maine West splashes to first win against Maine East
Freshman Brian Wasicak earned two first-place finishes to help propel the Maine West boys swimming team past rival Maine East 112-74 Friday in a Central Suburban League North meet in Park Ridge.
“We won our first meet of the year and the boys are finally starting to drop some times,” Maine West coach Ryan Claus said. “We are setting ourselves up nicely to have some nice drops at the end of the season.”
Wasicak took first in both the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 10.56 seconds) and 100 breaststroke(1:05.32).
Junior Joe Heinz placed first in 200 free (2:02.60) and second in the 100 fly (1:04.47) just ahead of freshman teammate Matt Boesche (1:07.05) and junior Ryan Atherton (1:07.47).
Boesche won the 100 backstroke (1:05.29) ahead of teammates junior Tom O’Malley (1:09.94) and junior Sean Conner (1:12.12) and was part of the first-place 400 relay with junior Adam Lietzau, freshman Mike Picchiotti and sophomore A.J. Unader (3:57.76).
Senior Ryan Alderson won the 500 free (5:49.33).
Wasicak also was part of two second-place relays with senior Stephen Woodford, Heinz and Boesche (200 medley , 1:52.21) and Woodford, Lietzau and Heinz (200 free, 1:40.59).
Unader took second in the 500 free (5:56.16) and fourth in the 200 free (2:14.16). He also teamed with Picchiotti, junior Dan Covington and junior Jake Kellerhals to take third in the 200 free relay (1:49.62).
Woodford (24.60), Kellerhals (26.25) and Picchiotti (27.19) finished 2-3-4 in the 50-yard free, as did Woodford (55.46), Picchiotti (59.84) and Lietzau (59.86) in the 100 free.
Connor, Covington, O’Malley and sophomore Konstadinos Denekos took second in the 400 free relay (4:06.58).
Junior Danny Hanns took second in diving (169.05) for Maine West (1-5).
Despite the loss, Maine East (1-5) had plenty to be proud of with six first-place finishes.
Kevin and Steven Tom each took first in separate events. Kevin won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.02, while Steven won the 50 free in 23.45.
Kevin Tom also took second in the 200 IM (2:11.54) and was part of two first-place relay teams with Steven Tom, Daniel Sieghart and freshman Danny Ward in the 200 medley (1:51.82) and 200 free (1:37.29)
Ward finished first in the 100 free (53.35) and second in the 200 free (2:05.97).
Sieghart placed first in diving with 173.10 points, while teammates Lance Lindsay (132.35) and Jeremy Rohrman (130.05) finished third and fourth.
Steven Tom took second (1:05.77) ahead of teammate Matt Wiegel (1:16.07) in the 100 breast.
