Not so long ago, the Highland Park boys basketball team was sitting with a 5-8 record.

But, on Saturday, the Giants (15-10) edged visiting Lake Forest 33-32 for its 10th win in their last 12 games.

“I’m extremely proud of the team and how they’re competing,” Highland Park coach Paul Harris said. “It’s different guys doing it.”

Senior Chris Kozloff was the go-to player against Lake Forest (14-11). His layup off a pass from Marin Kukoc with 6.5 seconds left gave Highland Park the win.

“We wanted to get the ball in Kukoc’s hands,” Harris said. “He drew the defense to him and made a great pass to Chris, who showed great poise with his shot faking and made a great finish.”

Kukoc led Highland Park with 13 points, and Jordan Reisner added eight.

“Our team defense was excellent,” Harris said. “We forced them to shoot a lot of contested jump shots and bothered enough of them to throw them off. We caught them on an off-shooting night, and that helped.”
