GBN brings out best in Niles North

Despite loss, Vikings achieve several best times


The Glenbrook North boys swim team defeated Niles North 112-74 Friday in a Central Suburban League North meet.

The Spartans’ winners included the 200-yard medley relay team A team (1:44.54), Brian Roytman in the 200 freestyle (1:48.70), Sean Sullivan in the 200 individual medley (2:11.74), Jason Chen in the 50 free (22.68) and the 100 free (49.48),Jonathan Roby in diving (297.60), the 200 free relay team  A team (1:33.20) and the 400 free relay team  A team (3:22.16).

Roby topped Niles North’s Arsen Sarkisian (269.20) in a battle of two of the state’s top divers.

Glenbrook North’s second-place finishers were Bobby Gilbert in the 200 IM (2:13.08), Michael Chen in the 100 butterfly (55.92), Matt Bacinich in the 100 free (51.59), Sullivan in the 500 free (5:07.86), Dean Karahalios in the 100 backstroke (59.82) and Danny Herman in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.33).

Finishing third for the Spartans were the B 200 medley relay team (1:47.49), Stefan Johnson in the 200 free (1:57.24) and 500 free (5:14.15), Tytus Kwiatowski in the 50 free (23.26) and 100 back (1:02.23), Chris Shamoon in diving (187.75), Roytman in the 100 fly (56.62), the 200 free relay B team (1:36.89) and the 400 free relay B team (3:38.99).

Niles North’s winners were sophomore Richard Gomez in the 500  free (5:01.60) and freshmen Javed Avdic in the 100 butterfly (55.54), Karol Mlynarski in the 100 backstroke (55.45) and Earl Kim  in the 100 breaststroke(1:08.05).

“I thought our guys really stepped up to the challenges that a strong team like GBN can bring,” Niles North coach Seth Orlove said. “We had many season and personal bests, and many tight races throughout the evening.”

Mlynarski took second in the 200 free (1:49.06), as did Avdic in the 50 free (23.22).

Junior Evan Hagedorn took third in both the 200 IM (2:14.18) and 100 breast (1:08.68).

Sophomore Ammar Shah (53.63) and Moon (54.26) finished third and fourth in the 100 free. Shah also finished fourth in the 200 free (1:58.27). Gomez also placed fourth in the 100 fly (57.03), as did senior Eric Tanaka (1:03.01) in the 100 back.

Niles North also took second in all three relays - the 200 medley (1:46.09), 200 free (1:36.41) and 400 free (3:27.98).
