Deerfield senior Christine Stitcher enjoyed more success on a different event at the 32nd annual Al Galatte Invitational Saturday at Rolling Meadows.
Stitcher finished second on balance beam despite a fall as her 9.1 only was beaten by Lake Forest senior Kylie Carlson’s 9.4 among 37 entries in the event.
The invite allowed all 19 teams to enter just two gymnasts per event, and each athlete can only compete once. Deerfield (64.45) finished ninth with Maine South (63.15) 11th and Glenbrook North 14th (61.75).
At last year's Galatte Invite, Stitcher won floor exercise with a career-best 9.5 and went on to qualify for the state meet in the event as well as all-around and the uneven parallel bars. Carlson was an all-state, top-five finisher last year on floor (3rd place) for the third year in a row and uneven bars (tied for 5th).
Deerfield’s Katie Marquardt was 10th on vault (8.55) and Ally Perbohner tied for 17th on uneven bars (7.9).
GBN sophomore Carli Betman was 14th on floor (8.75), and sophomore Tatum Zaransky tied for 16th on beam (8.1).
On floor, Maine South senior Haleigh Sir, a 2011 state floor qualifier, tied for 11th (8.85), and Lauryn Rotonda tied for 17th (8.65). Carly Berns was 16th on uneven bars (7.95) and Jenna Galuska shared 16th on vault (8.3).
Prospect (68.80), which missed qualifying for the eight-team state meet last year by .225, won the invite for the first time since 1986 and ended the three-year title reign by three-time defending state champion Carmel.
Lake Park (68.50) was a close second with Barrington (68.00) third. Carmel (66.40) was seventh.
