Deerfield splashes past Maine West in league opener

The Deerfield boys swimming team finished first in nine of its 12 events to beat Maine West 122-64 Friday in its Central Suburban League North opener in Des Plaines.
“We had OK swims, but we didn’t swim as well as we’d hope to,” Deerfield coach John Sullivan said. “We’re just coming off the break and getting into a bit of a groove.”
Deerfield (3-1, 1-0 in CSL North) swept the top two spots in the 200-yard medley with Foosaner, Zach Church, Mark Stern and Tim Letten winning in 1 minute, 49.61 seconds, and Jeremy Lerner, Logan Schwarzman, Lewis Goodpasture, and Kevin Ewing taking second in 1:57.60.
Deerfield’s Chris Roberts took first in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.69, followed by teammates Jack Mercola (2:05.71) and Nate Block (2:08.89) in third and fourth. Maine West’s Joe Heinz was second in 2:04.44.
Brian Wasicak of Maine West took first in the 200 individual medley (2:10.69) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.86). Wasicak was followed in the IM by Deerfield’s Goodpasture (2:17.43), Lerner (2:18.31) and Dan Perlovsky (2:27.45), who went 2-3-4.
Church topped the field in the 50 free in 24.28., with Maine West’s Stephen Woodford second in 25.03.

“That was big,” Sullivan said. “He stepped up and took control of that meet.”
Stern and Perlovsky finished 1-2 in the 100 butterfly in 58.79 and 1:04.40, respectively. Lerner and Sean Scopelliti went 1-2 in the 100 free at 56.30 and 56.84. Woodford took third in 56.91. Also having a 1-2 finish were Chris Roberts (1:02.45) and Foosaner (1:03.86) in the 100 breaststroke.
Mercola won the 500 free in 5:35.10, with Maine West’s Ryan Alderson of Maine West second in 5:47.21.
Maine West took first in the 200 freestyle relay with Heinz, Wasicak, Woodford and Adam Lietzau (1:41.25), followed by. Deerfield’s Scopelliti, Goodpasture, Stern and Roberts (1:41.53).
Church (1:04.98), Goodpasture (1:08.10) and Schwarzman (1:17.50) took 2-3-4 in the 100 breaststroke.
In the 400 yard freestyle relay, Deerfield went 1-2 behind Letten, Stern, Church, and Roberts ( 3:43.65). and Perlovsky, Foosaner, Lerner and Mercola (3:55.94).
